Frequently Asked Questions
Benefits of Subscribing

How often will I receive books?
Approximately every 7-8 weeks is the standard.

Must I keep every volume?
No. You are not obligated to keep any title including the first, introductory shipment. If you return the first shipment, however, we assume you do not wish to remain in the program and we discontinue your subscription. After the first shipment, you may return any book for any reason and stay in the program.

How do I return Library of America books?
If the package has not been opened, simply mark the carton "Return to Sender." Return postage is guaranteed and will be paid by The Library of America. If the original package has been opened, repack the book and mail it back to us. You may request a prepaid return label from Customer Service by phone or email, or you may add the necessary postage.

Our mailing address for returns:

The Library of America
Dept. 1000
Louisville, KY 40266-1000

Can I determine the order in which volumes are sent?
No. Books are sent in a fixed sequence.

Also, if there are volume(s) you do not want to wait for, you may order those books for immediate shipment, at the subscription rate.

How may I pay for my subscription?
You will be sent an invoice with each shipment for payment by check or money order. Cash cannot be accepted. If you prefer, we can bill your credit card (Visa and MasterCard only) on an automatic, prepaid basis. In that case, the statement that accompanies the shipment will serve as the credit card receipt, and will reflect a "zero due" balance.

May I purchase additional or earlier books?
Yes. You may order any of the titles from the series at the subscription rate for yourself or for gifts at any time, by writing or calling our Customer Service Center.

We also offer special savings to subscribers periodically throughout the year, giving them the opportunity to select from a complete list of titles of any book they would like for immediate shipment.

May I pay for individual volumes with my credit card without having it billed automatically for subsequent shipments?
Yes. You must, however, clearly indicate the charge is for that single payment only. Otherwise, your account will be converted to automatic charges.

The exception is for non-subscription mailings, for which your choice of the credit card payment option will not cause conversion of the account. Credit card information cannot be retained on file as part of your record for single-time uses. The credit card information will be required anew each time.

Can I cancel my account at any time?
Yes. You are under no obligation to buy a set number of volumes. Simply inform Customer Service in writing or by telephone. Please be aware that shipments may already be on their way to you. If so, you need only mark them "return to sender."

Walt Whitman
Just as you feel when you look on the river and sky, so I felt;
Just as any of you is one of a living crowd, I was one of a crowd;
Just as you are refresh'd by the gladness of the river and the bright flow, I was refresh'd;
Just as you stand and lean on the rail, yet hurry with the swift current, I stood, yet was hurried;
Just as you look on the numberless masts of ships, and the thick-stem'd pipes of steamboats, I look'd.
